Talking Politics: Business & CA's Ballot Measures

As the 2020 election quickly approaches, Californians soon will be casting their votes—by mail or in person at the polls—both in the upcoming presidential election and on a wide variety of important ballot propositions for the state. Consumer privacy and data protection, the nature of employment in the gig economy, commercial property taxes and residential rent control—these are just a few among a dozen new statewide measures voters will decide in November, each of them with major impact on millions of Californians, their communities, and businesses large and small operating in the state.

Join us for a panel discussion with an experienced group of Manatt Government and Regulatory professionals and Raphael Sonenshein, executive director of the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs at Cal State LA, to learn about the top issues affecting California and how the ballot measures may determine how businesses operate in the state. The panel will be moderated by Kathleen Brown, partner in Manatt’s Government and Regulatory group and former California state treasurer and 1994 Democratic nominee for governor of California.

Topics to be covered include:

  • The State of the Golden State: What are the public policy implications of the many challenges Californians have faced this year, including the COVID-19 pandemic, recession, wildfires and social justice issues?
  • Everything You Want to Know, But May Be Afraid to Ask: Review of key California ballot propositions ranging from split roll to stem cell research, affirmative action and the future of employment for the gig economy.
  • 2020 Presidential Election: Possible outcomes of the election and how those outcomes may affect the state.
