State and Local Policy Learning Lab: How Health IT Can Support On-the-Ground SDOH Initiatives

Learn How to Overcome Obstacles and Advance SDOH Initiatives Through Technology at a New Webinar From Manatt and HIMSS.

Social determinants of health (SDOH)—the conditions under which people live, learn, work and age—have a greater impact on health risks and outcomes than medical care. As a result, states are increasingly looking to address SDOH as a way to improve population health, address health disparities and inequities, and squeeze more value from Medicaid dollars. Data and information technology play a pivotal role in enabling SDOH initiatives by capturing information at an individual and community level and driving analytics to bring critical insights that can lead to improved care and results. Accessing and using sensitive SDOH data, however, invokes considerable operational, technical, and privacy and security challenges.

How can health IT help institutions successfully meet SDOH program objectives, and how can the numerous challenges around accessing and using SDOH information be overcome? Find out at a new webinar from Manatt, hosted by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), with a guest presenter from the state of Virginia. Key topics include:

  • The ways technology-driven solutions can support SDOH program goals, including:
    • Improving individual and community health
    • Supporting engagement and new partnerships between government, payers, providers and human service organizations
    • Evaluating the impact of SDOH interventions on health outcomes, healthcare costs and health equity
  • How COVID-19 has exemplified deep-rooted institutional racism and barriers to health equity that can be addressed in SDOH programs and initiatives
  • The challenges associated with implementing SDOH initiatives—and the role of health IT in addressing those challenges
  • Health IT-driven solutions for combining data from diverse sources to enable innovative, meaningful SDOH applications
  • Key considerations when defining, collecting, exchanging, and reporting healthcare and social services data around infrastructure, data integration, privacy and security, and data governance
