Deborah Kelly: DC Bar Spotlight

Member Spotlight: Deborah Kelly Combines Passion for the Law and Teaching
– DC Bar

Manatt’s Deborah Kelly, a partner in the firm’s employment and labor practice, was interviewed by DC Bar for an article on her background and the trajectory of her career.

In the article, Kelly told the publication that she initially pursued a law degree to become a law professor while working as a full-time professor at American University. Later, as a fifth-year associate, she took a case representing former Pan Am flight attendants who lost their jobs after Delta withdrew its agreement to acquire the company. This experience led her to ask her firm to launch an employment practice.

For Kelly, employment law is “the second most personal kind of law you can practice,” behind family law. “Emotions run so high and hurt runs so deep in employment law,” Kelly explained. “People work hard and sacrifice a lot in their work.”
