Compliance Is First Step in Record-Sharing Regulation

Addiction Treatment Privacy Regulations in Question
– Bloomberg BNA’s Health Care Policy Report

Manatt’s Alexander Dworkowitz, an associate with Manatt Health, was quoted by Bloomberg BNA in a healthcare policy report article examining whether healthcare providers have enough information on and access to patients’ addiction histories.

Dworkowitz explained that helping healthcare providers understand how to comply with regulations surrounding the sharing of medical records can be a good first step toward tackling questions raised in what can often feel like a gray area.

“I don’t think anyone knows quite what the answer is, but I think there’s a sense that there needs to be a better solution for sharing of this information that also still recognizes the fact that these records can be stigmatizing,” possibly more than other health records, “and patients are concerned about their privacy,” he said.
