Ario Discusses Decline in Insurer Applications Under ACA

CMS: Insurers Are Bolting from ACA Exchanges

MedPage Today interviewed Joel Ario, managing director with Manatt Health, to discuss the declining rate of insurers filing initial applications under the Affordable Care Act.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported that 141 qualified health plan insurers filed applications for the 2018 plan year, compared with 227 insurers at the filing deadline in 2017. This demonstrates a 38 percent drop in filings.

“The raw number of 141 [applications] doesn’t tell you a lot … until you know how big a footprint each of those carriers offers,” said Ario. He also noted that there tends to be attrition in filings between the initial deadline and actual open enrollment.
