2021 Top Intellectual Property Lawyers
– Daily Journal

Leader of Manatt’s Entertainment Litigation practice Robert Jacobs was named to Daily Journal’s 2021 Top Intellectual Property Lawyers list. This list recognizes California’s leading lawyers handling intellectual property matters.

Daily Journal recognized Jacobs for his work successfully defending Marshmello, Steve Mac and Polygram Publishing Inc. and Kobalt Music Publishing America against a copyright infringement suit filed by Russian electronic DJ Artem Stoliarov, as well as his representation of 300 Entertainment against pre-litigation claims by Keara Wilson, the creator of the TikTok dance known as the “Savage Challenge,” alleging that the use of the dance in the lyric video for Megan Thee Stallion’s song “Savage” violates Wilson’s rights under the Copyright Act, the Lanham Act and various state law theories. Commenting on the importance of the Marshmello case, Jacobs said: “It's developed into an interesting situation, an industry-wide issue. You hire remixers to come in and add flourishes here and there and then move on. They don't get rights in the recording, or, if they do, it's done very specifically.”
