How Medicaid Expansion Affects Montana’s Budget, Economy, and Residents

Prepared for the Montana Healthcare Foundation

In an analysis funded by the Montana Healthcare Foundation, Manatt Health found that Montana’s Medicaid expansion had positive impacts on the state’s budget and healthcare economy, as well as helped promote a healthier population. Montana’s Medicaid expansion saved the state in excess of $36 million, as the state benefited from new federal funding and enhanced matching rates for several critical populations. The healthcare industry, Montana’s largest source of private sector income and its second-largest source of jobs, saw growth accelerate in the wake of expansion, with Montana’s hospitals and providers reporting that uncompensated care costs declined by more than $100 million. Manatt also found that more than 65,000 expansion adults have accessed preventive care services, helping promote a healthier workforce.
