A COVID-19 Syllabus: Strategies for Academic Institutions to Succeed in the New Normal

Universities and other academic institutions continue to grapple with how best to continue to provide a quality educational experience to their students in the face of COVID-19, while maintaining their community’s health and the institution’s financial well-being. The effects of this pandemic will extend far beyond the initial crisis. Institutions will be best positioned to not only survive but thrive in the COVID-19 era if they are thinking comprehensively about the many legal issues and strategic considerations at play.

This 30-minute webinar will briefly cover top-of-mind considerations with respect to litigation mitigation and defense, digital strategies for moving partial or whole operations online, and leveraging and repositioning real estate assets. The program will be followed by a brief Q&A.

Topics will include the following:

  • What to expect in terms of lawsuits related to reimbursement for tuition, room and board, and paid programs that students can no longer access
  • Litigation mitigation techniques, including trying to make a remote experience closer to the real deal, both academically and socially
  • An overview of the new digital education landscape and the variety of factors institutions will need to consider as they build a robust and durable online education infrastructure
  • How real estate portfolios can be leveraged and repositioned in order to better fit an institution’s current and evolving financial and operational needs
