Manatt Secures Win in First All-Virtual Patent Infringement Jury Trial

A Manatt team led by intellectual property protection and enforcement partner Robert Becker and litigation partner Christopher Wanger successfully secured a $4 million judgment on behalf of Ironburg Inventions Ltd, the patent holding arm of Scuf Gaming, in the nation’s first all-virtual patent infringement jury trial. The suit (Ironburg Inventions Ltd. v. Valve Corp. (U.S. District Court, Western District, Washington)) accused Valve Corporation of willfully infringing Ironburg Inventions’ controller patent in its design of Valve’s Steam controller.

The all-virtual jury found that Valve Corp. infringed all seven patent claims at issue and said the infringement was willful, which may result in an increased damages amount to as much as triple the royalties awarded.

The Manatt trial team representing Ironburg Inventions also included associate Alexandra Hill.

Becker, Wanger and Hill were recognized by The Am Law Litigation Daily as “Litigator of the Week” runner-ups for their work on this case.
