Medicaid Expansion Funding Has Become Critical for States

Bloomberg BNA quoted Manatt’s Jocelyn Guyer, a managing director with Manatt Health, in an article about the future of Medicaid as it faces a significant overhaul. After House GOP leaders pulled from consideration the American Health Care Act, Medicaid will no longer see the planned $880 billion in planned cutbacks through federal spending caps and a scaling back of the expansion.

“One of the key lessons from last week is Medicaid expansion funding is baked into state budgets and has become a critical source of coverage; it’s clearly one of the issues that blew up the health debate,” Guyer said, further explaining that section 1115 waivers will likely become the “primary vehicle” for Republican administration ideas.
